First time visitors often think of Sardinia as a small island. That is not the case, and many locations (especially in the mountainous interior) are remote and difficult to reach by public transport that is intermittent and unreliable, the best option is to hire a car. Should you choose to travel by public transport it is advisable that you plan your trip carefully and obtain full train and buses timetables in advance.  Some transport links are provided below.

Airport Transfert

Alghero Airport

The airport is about 12Km from the town centre and the quickest way to reach town is by taxi (fare approx E25=), otherwise there are regular cheap bus connections.

Timetable and bus companies details - Click on the link to view details of bus companies and timetables for the following destinations: Alghero town, Badesi, Castelsardo, Costa Paradiso, Cagliari, Isola Rossa, Macomer, Nuoro, Ottana, Oristano, Porto Torres, Sassari, Santa Teresa di Gallura, Stintino, Valledoria e Vignola.

Cagliari Airport

Cagliari Airport is 7Km from the centre of town. Buses for the airport leave from the main ARST bus station (just outside the train station). Taxis from the airport to Cagliari are not cheap, enquire about fares before hand.

Turmo Travel coaches link Cagliari and Olbia and they stop outside the main ARST bus station. They also stop at Oristano, Nuoro and Olbia Airport.

Logudoro Tours coaches provide connections between Cagliari town and Alghero airport (stopping at Oristano, Macomer and Sassari). The fare is €12.50 and the journey time is 3.5 hours.

Olbia Airport

The airport is on the outskirts of town, so taxi fares to the centre of town are fairly reasonable.

- State Rail Company

- Only provides local services between Cagliari and Isili, Nuoro and Macomer and from Sassari to Alghero, Nulvi and Sorso. They also organise extensive bus and coach services.

- These special tourist trains operate between June and September only in the following routes: Mandas/ Arbatax; Isili/ Sorgono; Macomer/ Bosa; Nulvi/ Tempio/ Palau. They are an excellent way to discover Sardinian hinterland. These trains with vintage wagons from 1913 and steam locomotives from the 1930s, run between spectacular mountain gorges of breathtaking beauty and otherwise unreachable areas. These are memorable train journeys that will make you feel as if you have taken a step back in time (think D.H. Lawrence in the "Sea and Sardinia" book).

Ferries

Sardinia has daily services to mainland Italy and to some Corsica/ France ports. Ferry services are more extensive in the summer, during which a larger number of companies operate.

Trains

Even though trains are usually on time, rail transport is not particularly efficient in terms of destinations reached and timetables (the visit to the island is best combined with bus services). Buy tickets at the station and stamp them at the machines on the platform before you travel. If you get caught without a stamped ticket you will be charged an hefty fine.

Buses & Coaches

ARST - Sardinia public transport authorities. ARST buses provide a fairly comprehensive transport network even to remote villages. Tickets have to be bought in advance and must be stamped on board. Tickets are available at coach stations or authorised bars, shops and newsagents. N.B.: there are no Sunday and Public Holiday services to many locations.
