Wines of Sardinia and in particular of the Bosa area
Sardinia as in other parts of Italy offers a wide range of wines, from the simple every day table wine to some excelent special wines here we can only offer a glimpse of what is there to be sampled.
|
Vermentino (white)
This wine is widely found throughout Sardinia and is a fresh crisp dry white wine the better examples of which have a smooth vanilla flavour. A very good example of this wine is "Costamolino" from the Argiolas winery.

Cannonau (red)
There are many examples of this robust red (or as the locals call it "Black") wine here in Sardinia. It is a deep red wine with rich deep flavoursof hedgroe fruits. A good example of this wine is ????????????

Malvasia di Bosa
This wine made using the Malvasia grape that is widespread throughout Italy here in this area due to the specific soil conditions produces a truly unique wine. The sub variety of Malvasia grape "Malvasia Bosano" produces small grapes in very sparse bunches so the yeild per plant is very low. The wine that is produced from these grapes produces a wine of around 16% A.B.V. The colour is light amber and the aroma distinctive, the wine when young is quite sweet and remeniscent of a good sherry, a good desert wine, but as it ages it becomes dry but also rounded on the pallet. It is justly much prized and highly valued as the growing area is extremely small. Unfortunately there are of late some wines offered for sale as Malvasia di Bosa that are nothing more than ordinary wine ofter mixed with Moscato. However once you have tasted a genuine Malvasia di Bosa you will see instantly that it is a world away from being just a white wine.

Giro
The wine made from the Giro grape grown in the same lime rich soil conditions as the Malvasia is a deep almost Port like wine of around 17% A.B.V. It has become something of a rarety as the tastes of the locals has changed to prefer drier red wines. It is quite a sweet wine but with great depth and richness to the taste, a good example in my opinion is as good as any Port and indeed better than most. If you are lucky enough to find this wine it will without doubt be relatively expensive, but believe me it is worth it.

Beer
A note for beer drinkers, Sardinia has its own brewery and produces a beer of exceptional quality that you will see nowhere else. I have always been a fan of british beer and in particular best bitter and have never really enjoyed the lager type beers of the continent. However her the "ichnusa" beer is , for a lager type beer genuinly superb. Slightly less gassy than the norm and full of flavour. There is lately a somewhat strange tendency for bar owners to want to give you foreign beers if you do not specify which you would like. If you want the best beer here in sardinia you should specify "ichnusa red label"
